8 Simple Things You Can Do Today to Age Gracefully

Aging gracefully is a science.

A combination of self-care and creating habits for happiness. Taking care of your body as well as your emotional well-being.

If you feel like you’re still young, we think you should look young too. There are millions of articles on the internet featuring advice from taking fish oil to avoiding white sugar, these tried and true methods are your first line of defense against the aging process.

1 . Wear sunscreen like it’s your job.

Not just for days at the pool or beach, sunscreens with an SPF of between 15 and 50 prevent wrinkles, brown spots, aging and cancer. Think bigger is better? Research shows that SPFs claiming more than 50 don’t offer additional benefits nor any additional longevity.

2. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

As you age, your body’s water content decreases—particularly if you’re taking prescription meds. Doctors and scientists recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a person who weighs 140 pounds should drink 70 ounces of water every day.

3. You are what you eat.

A healthy diet consisting of mostly fruits and vegetables and paired with lean meats or proteins provides proper nutrition, improving your overall health. If you enjoy a snack, Shape’s got the a list of the best healthy snacks on store shelves.

The World Health Organization makes the following recommendations:

  • >  Eat roughly the same amount of calories that your body is using. A healthy weight is a balance between energy consumed and energy that is ‘burnt off’.
  • >  Limit intake of fats, and prefer unsaturated fats to saturated fats and trans fats.
  • >  Increase consumption of plant foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.
  • >  Limit the intake of sugar.
  • >  Limit salt / sodium consumption from all sources and ensure that salt is iodized.

 

4. Quit smoking.

In addition to increased incidents of heart disease and cancer, smoking leads to periodontal (gum) disease, bad breath, and yellow teeth. If you’re struggling to quit, smokefree.gov offers plenty of resources. And, find a quitting buddy who’ll keep you accountable.

5. Exercise 30-45 minutes a day three to four times a week.

Moderate exercise keeps your heart healthy and your blood flowing to your skin. And, it’s good for your mood and figure. Walking, running, swimming, yoga—whatever you’re in to, keep it up.

6. Get your rest.

For mental acuity, you need six to eight hours of sleep each night. Skimping on sleep leads to unsightly bags and swelling; excessive daytime sleepiness and moments of forgetfulness.

7. De-stress your life.

There are literally thousands of studies showing that stress will kill you. Find your method for dealing with stress. Exercise, meditation, journaling, therapy, and reading are a few suggestions. Find your happy place and let go.

8. Change your smile.

A healthy, beautiful smile takes years off your face. Whitening treatments like Zoom or Kor keep your smile radiant. And, straightening your teeth has both cosmetic and health implications.
